Padirac est un petit village français, situé dans le département du Lot et la région de Midi-Pyrénées. Ses habitants sont appelés les Padiracois et les Padiracoises. La commune s'étend sur 8,9 km² et compte 200 habitants depuis le dernier recensement de la population datant de 2006. Avec une densité de 22,6 habitants par km², Padirac a connu une nette hausse de 18,3% de sa population par rapport à 1999. Entouré par les communes de Thégra, Miers et Alvignac, Padirac est situé à 39 km au Sud-Est de Brive-la-Gaillarde la plus grande ville à proximité. Situé à 359 mètres d'altitude, le village de Padirac a pour coordonnées géographiques Latitude: 44° 50' 30'' Nord Longitude: 1° 45' 12'' Est. Padirac est une commune du parc naturel régional des Causses du Quercy.

A legend supposed to explain the origin of this pilgrimage has given rise to controversies between critical and traditional schools, especially in recent times. A vehicle by which the legend was disseminated and pilgrims drawn to the site was The Miracles of Our Lady of Rocamadour, written ca. 1172, an example of the miracula, or books of collected miracles, which had such a wide audience in the Middle Ages.  According to the founding legend, Rocamadour is named after the founder of the ancient sanctuary, Saint Amator, identified with the Biblical Zacheus, the tax collector of Jericho mentioned in Luke 19:1-10, and the husband of St. Veronica, who wiped Jesus' face on the way to Calvary. Driven out of Palestine by persecution, St. Amadour and Veronica embarked in a frail skiff and, guided by an angel, landed on the coast of Aquitaine, where they met Bishop St. Martial, another disciple of Christ who was preaching the Gospel in the south-west of Gaul. ...
